Summer book-writing activities

Summers are a great time to work on your book, even if you have work, trips, and plans to hang out by the pool or at the beach. Things usually slow down during the hotter months, and this is a perfect time to do a few things with your manuscript.

  • Plan your book contents; see more here.

  • Establish writing goals, such as writing 500 words a day or even a chapter a week.

  • Continue writing, but use prompts unrelated to your book. This can help reenergize your writing for the book and even help you come up with new ideas for your book.

  • Set up a writing collaboration with one to three colleagues or friends. Exchange feedback, share ideas, and revise together.

  • Plan the marketing aspects of your book such as a social media calendar, identifying events you can sell the book at, how to get people to read it, and so forth.

  • Take a few weeks off from working on your book. This often will give you renewed energy and fresh eyes to review your book.

  • Read, read, and read some more. The best way, aside from practicing your writing, to strengthen your book is to read other books and learn from their styles, voices, and mechanics.

The best thing is that all of these activities can be used year-round, too!

Behind her is a simple wood-and-metal desk, with Savory Words books held together by typewriter-design bookends, and a lamp. Trudy is wearing a dark orange printed shirt with a dark blue cardigan over; she has on dangly gold earrings.
