How to convert your dissertation into a book
With more and more people earning their doctorates, there are more dissertations written than ever before. It’s a wonderful idea to turn a dissertation into a published book, but there are many things that need to be done before this can be achieved.
Decide who the reader is. First, decide who you want to read your book. A dissertation typically has fewer than 100 people who read it, while a successful book can have thousands of readers. Also consider if this book will be a textbook or another type of book. This can determine who you submit your manuscript to. For example, if your dissertation focuses on a topic that is highly scientific, you may want to look for science-oriented publishers.
Plan the contents. The contents should not be the same format as your dissertation. Instead, convert the contents into a readable, enjoyable book (even if it’s a textbook) for readers. Identify which parts to remove and to leave in. This will involve rewriting many parts, but remember, the book likely will be shorter than the dissertation. You also won’t have to include so many specific citations, depending on the content, which will help the book become more relatable for the reader.
Begin revising. Begin revising the book by working with a professional editor who can help you figure out what to keep and what to remove — and what to add. The editor will also help make the book more appealing and beneficial.
